The Mexican cuisine here is authentic and probably reflects several regions of Mexico but the tacos cannot be beat for authenticity and even the tortilla is toasted tostado style.

An absolute hidden gem. Until recently, I thought that Tienda el Castillo was just a minimart-type place. When I was driving in the area and looking for a late lunch, I realized via Yelp that it was actually half restaurant/half market. And what a find: I had two asada and two carnitas tacos, served simply with cilantro and onion, with lime and salsa verde on the side. Both were outstanding, and the fresh corn tortillas were among the best I've had. The menu is extensive and very inexpensive ($3 or less for most tacos, and ~$7 for most burritos). They've got some of the more unusual options like tongue and head meat as well. I'll be back for lunch very soon. The added bonus was the market section! Tons of Latin specialities I haven't seen many other places in Jax - I'm especially glad to know there's a source for cotija and Oaxaca cheese close by, along with some great hot sauces that blow Tabasco away. The service was very friendly, though it definitely helps to know a little Spanish.

I've called this location several times and always received a busy signal. Stopped in one evening and I assume they were closing up. Saw a few people sitting at the tables and some folks shopping, but the ladies at the food counter wasn't taking any orders. Did not check the sign to see when they closed that day. Was able to get them on the phone another day, around lunch time and placed an order. My wife picked it up and it was ready when she arrived. The pastor and chicken tacos were great. Do like that they use the two corn tortillas unlike some of the other taco joints. Will be returning.

Tucked into a corner of a small shopping plaza, Tienda El Castillo is barely noticeable, with it's small size and inconspicuous signage. It's definitely one of those "if you're not looking for it, you'll miss it" stores. I happened upon it the other night when I discovered the Mr. Taco food truck parked outside, and after I placed my order and was waiting on my nom noms, i ventured in to check it out. Goods: Wow...for such a tiny store, this place packs a punch. From the cooler stuffed with a plethora of flavorful cheeses to wall after wall of diffferent spices and chiles. Pretty much every ingredient that goes into a spanish dish, soup, or stew...you'll find here. Good to know! They have a nice bread selection and also sell spanish concha pastries that they get daily from a bakery. I purchased a few selections off their candy wall (I love the spanish Chiclets gum!), because I'm a fattie and couldn't resist. I was truly impressed! The Verdict: Yes, highly recommended, especially if you do alot of cooking and you're looking for that one thingggggg that you need to make a dish and haven't found. Give this place a shot, even if you're like me and want to browse the joint while you're waiting for Mr. Taco. Remember Yeeps: It's the tiny, family-run businesses out there that usually have the best stuff, and are waiting to be discovered. This, to me, served as yet another eye-opening experience and I'll be back for one of those concha pastries soon! Keep on Yelping and as always...SUPPORT your local eats and businesses!
